Is there anyone as unforgettable as artist
Zun, Hoo Yon?
Marc Chagall was an artist who believed that in life there is only one color and that color is love, and he illustrated the hues of this spirit on canvas, giving joy to all who look on his work. But it was only upon appreciating the art of Zun, Hoo Yon that I could truly understand the meaning of Zun’s words “Love is my religion.”

[ Love ]
In every one of Zun’s approximately 100 pieces of art, there is a boy who is either hugging a girl or smelling a flower, seemingly euphoric as he indulges in love. Viewers are able to discover Zun’s sensation of love via his works and can understand him when he said, “My love is like a spring rain,” as a spring rain incubates life within the soaked earth. As such, Zun’s works are permeated with this eagerness to find happiness, as the boy is eager to express his infinite love for the girl or for the flower. Sun, moon, star, bird, and Cupid’s arrow are items adopted by Zun to confirm that anything can be used to express love as is true in both art and life. Love is a colored language in Zun’s works.
Zun once told his lover “your moist lips, snowy bosom, and your noble moves, all of which spring up in a dream, become love, and awaken as the dazzling, brilliant sun” are brought to life with radiance on canvas. Just like “Bella,” who is at the heart of Chagall’s art, a gorgeous woman perpetually stars in the works of Zun. However, the woman, unlike “Bella,” has no name. As Chagall reminisced in his art about the passionate romance he once had with a woman during his pure, immature days, Zun’s work is dominated by the restless melody of love. The backgrounds of his paintings are embroidered with moons, stars, and clouds.
Often, the boy cruises through the sky with a bunch of flowers in his arms and the half moon as his vessel, like the Little Prince. Sure, the boy may be the artist’s persona. However, unlike Chagall who flies in the sky with “Bella” in his arms, the absence of a woman’s image in Zun’s work somewhat bores and disappoints the viewer.
Nevertheless, Zun’s works are phantasmal and beautiful. And everyone is invited into his world via the canvas to dream and enjoy. The muse in Zun's work is an anonymous female who mesmerizes the buoyant, flower-holding boy.
As Chagall once said “My fiancée is more pure than all the Madonnas by Raphael,” the woman in Zun’s work is as beautiful and innocent as Audrey Hepburn and as mysterious as the Mona Lisa. So his lover is nowhere and everywhere. That's why his paintings add beauty and brilliance to everyone's hearts.

[ Flower ]
The painting <Stars, Moon, and Love> by the artist Zun, Hoo Yon in 2019, depicts a flower bouquet filling the entire space and a lover with wings. From this image, I can affirm that his love goes beyond just agape love, and that he falls in passionate platonic love with her.
Zun’s peculiar style stems from the numerous exchanges he had while engraving with eminent artists in those days. Although he mentions his communications with Jang Wook-jin, Chun Kyung-ja, Lee Dae-won, and Byun Jong-ha, Lee Wal-Chong, who seemingly influenced his work, his pursuit of love is original and opinionated. He would undoubtedly say, “The perfection in art and life comes true through love,” reminiscing on the theme that he has so far pursued to perfect in his work. Love and dream are Zun’s eternal muses and themes. That is why all the hues and shapes in his work are as soft as cotton, and the sunlight is sensuous and lovely.
Zun is so romantic as to regard the act of giving a flower bouquet to a loved one as the best present one could give. It is because he is an artist, and just like Chagall said, a bride, a groom, and a flower bouquet expressing “love” is the greatest inspiration of all. Nevertheless, some of the patterns in Zun’s works are intriguing.
In every case, flowers are held in one’s arms. Here, the flowers represent women to the artist, and, at the same time, the women are flowers as well. This is how women in Zun’s works are always equivalent or identical to flowers. Zun’s feeling toward his love is, as can be read in a love poem, tranquil, serene, and gentle.

[ Dreams ]
“I have love in me. I will devote myself to loving you until my life ends.” As Zun confesses, his images are seemingly random in arrangement or lack unity. However, a childhood innocence arises from the balance between the spaces, margins, and hues.
The visual metaphor that brings about the childish image is also evenly inscribed with sadness and longing. The endless longing is configured into love, which is the main theme suggested by the artist.
After having appreciated the works of Zun, I now ask myself: isn’t having a subject to love the highest level of blessing an artist can have? The secret of Zun’s love, seen in his works through being depicted with fancy colors, has been discovered. But this is not to say that the artist is always obsessed with love in dreams and fantasies. In one of his works that he drew from under a tree, the artist sorrowfully confesses, “Sometimes, I want to be alone under this tree to drink azalea liquor for eternity.”
The loneliness he expresses demonstrates the pain and distress one feels in return for being in love. Zun, as a person and an artist, tells us frankly the telltale clue to the very soul and root of all his works.
Zun’s success as a renowned designer of Yon Art, a businessman, and the manufacture of innovative, luxurious calendars are the titles he has earned during his tumultuous quest for love.
Now an experienced artist in his 70s, Zun would surely know that his belief and choices were correct. The belief that anything can be chosen to be the subject of a painting as long as love is its setting is manifested in all of his works. The determination found in a message he left while working on his latest piece eloquently speaks of his art and philosophy.
“Love is my religion.” This single line from Zun covers everything in his work, shaking our minds as well. Pablo Picasso once said “When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color is.” If Picasso could have seen Zun’s works, he would definitely say, “When Chagall is gone, Zun, Hoo Yon will be the only painter left who understands what love is.”
